Before making a garment, a whole lot of time is often spend chasing for period materials or well made substitutes. Le sigh!
Don't we all secretly dream of just getting up in the morning, hurry into our daydress, stuff our purse with lots of coins and fetch our reticule to go see the haberdasher's around the corner, where we could spend hours admiring the latest ribbons, fabrics, threads and buttons?
Instead of adding articles online to a virtual basket, we could take the supplies into our hands and thouroughly check their quality, while having a fine chat with the haberdasher's wife about the latest gossip in town - just like in the wonderful Jane Austen movies or in Gaskell's "Cranford".

The flair of bygone days is still around on antique markets and this morning I've had the pleasure to find a few lovely old fashioned booths at the famous antique market in Dortmund.
Linen thread in different qualities, silk thread, gloving thread, sewing needles and petite dorset buttons...and a bit of daydreaming...

Mein Retikül war schnell gefüllt;)
My reticule was quickly stuffed;)

  1. Thank you for sharing...and thank you for reminding me, as I have a few old bits and bobs like these in a drawer. I never thought of looking out for more items to go with them to make a display. Excellent!
