Museumsbesuch

It is a lazy Sunday...
...and it rains cats and dogs, why not spend some time at a (virtual) museum?!
As long as I can think back I'm drawn to portraits and I love looking through a variety of them from early portrait paintings by Holbein to photos from the turn of the 20th century. Meanwhile I try to ignore some people's remarks citing the movie The Sixth Sense "I see dead people".

Zuletzt haben mich zwei Portraits besonders fasziniert.
Recently two portraits caught my attention.

Gilbert Stuart, Portrait of a young lady (ca.1803)

Her dress is beautiful and her hairdo is simply gorgeous! Look at that hair!!!
Furthermore it is really interesting to learn, that the background occurs in most of Gilbert Stuart's paintings.

Friedrich Carl Gröger, seine Pflegetochter Lina/his foster Lina (1802)

The collar is awesome and the construction of the chemisette, which is worn over the actual dress, is remarkable.

Last but not least please allow me to look back to yesterday. On Saturday we've been once more invited to the exhibition "Chapeau" at the museum in Menden. Andrea and I took the time by the forelock to marvel over portraits...
...the photo cracks me up!

  1. A chemisette worn over a dress?! Genius!

  2. And the seams on the front are also very unusual, aren't they?! Plus I have to admit that I'm not sure wether it is really called a chemisette when it's worn like this or wether it has a different name.
