During my recent visit to a fabric market in my neighbourhood town, I - accidently like always - stumbled over an amazing cotton print fabric, which couldn't be more dutch:
coloured blue, red and white with tiny windmills.
And as I fancied the beautiful and colourful shortgowns on Meg Andrews site (here and here) for quite some time, I quickly made the purchase.
I decided to constructed a shortgown based on the two more colourful pieces on the above mentioned site: here I favoured the back cut, there the pleats - very important to me were the quite short cut of the garment, the lovely three buttons on the back and the two-pieced sleeves.
And the result was a very comfortable period everyday garment.

I wear the shortgown with (appropriate underwear) a white skirt, a fichu and a cap, which was inspired by the one in Wybrand Hendriks' painting.

The "low" back with lots of pleats and three deathhead buttons...and, oops! The fichu behaves unruly!

One of the original pieces also has a quite colourful lining, thus I decided to take a few cotton patches for this project. Even the dotted fabric is period (there's a poke bonnet with a red/white dotted lining in the book "Hats & Bonnets" from the Snowshill Collection) - in general dotted fabrics seemed to be fashionable from the 1810s onward.
The shortgown is closed with two ribbons in the front and a third ribbon (outside) in self fabric.
The photo above shows the small cut of the back piece and the two-pieced sleeves.

  1. Hach - wunderbar!

  2. I love it! I like these simpler styles. The pleats in the back are really nice. I must add a regency shortgown to my (too) long to do-list :)

  3. What a lovely and comfortable looking garment. Were these always worn with a white skirt, or would colored/printed ones be worn as well?

  4. @ Sarah Jane: Hi:) There are actually two shortgowns (dating 1820s) with matching skirts on Meg Andrews site (they are on the site with the sold items).
It is highly comfortable to wear and might even give an old dress a new look.

  7. What fun fabric! I made a short gown in white last year, but now i think perhaps one in a colourful print is in order :) I especially love the photos of it "in use".
