I purchased this month's find this very morning on an antique fair.
Have I ever mentioned that I do love hand-written letters?
Well, apparently I do love hand written-letters (honestly, this cannot be mentioned enough!)
and everything about writing.
But this time it's not about a letter or a portable writing desk, but about something that has unfortunately lost it's meaning in modern times:
a lettercase!
To be more precise a letter case made from lavender silk taffeta and...oh well, this time words won't do!  On to the pictures:
Yes, the lettercase is quite small, it only measures about 9.0 x 16.0 cm. (A tiny bit bigger in size than a carte de visite case and slightly smaller than usual letter cases)
Luckily the color is only slightly bleached throughout the years. Unfortunately the camera isn't able to catch the true color.
The embroidery is made using chain stitch. Inside the case is stiffened with what feels like thin cardboard.
The pattern is on both sides, the edge is bound with tiny lace.
And now the "squeeee" moment, which emphazised my suspicion that this might be a lettercase for love letters:
The inside reveals four pockets (two pocket flaps) and a beautiful saying
"How sweet it is, to be with you"

The tiny chain stitch made me feel absolutely speechless!
The lettercase is lined with cream silk. My guess is that this cute and charming lettercase is from around 1800 (maybe a bit earlier or later)!?

And now it's up to you, to imagine the beautiful hand-written love letters, which have once been treasured in this lettercase...sigh...

  2. Hallo Sabine!

    Bianca

  3. Sabine,

That is truly adorable! Such a treasure...thank you for sharing it with us. It makes me long for such things in the modern world. I fear that with email, Facebook, Twitter and such, letter writing is nearly a thing of the past.

  6. @ Sarah: I'm afraid it will take years until I master such tiny stitches;), but indeed it's quite inspiring and it's fun to see what vibrant colours they've used!
@Jenni: You're right, I wish the art of letter writing would return...sigh...
@The Lady Ship: Erstmal Hallo & Willkommen hier! Zu Deiner Frage, der Markt fand in Dortmund statt:)

  7. Dear Sabine,

Sigh......what a wonderful project for the wintertime. To work with such a luscious color and such sentiments. I hope you do; am sure your skills will really pick up with the practice.

    Very best,
    Natalie

  8. Dear Sabine,

What an EXQUISITE find! How lucky you were.

I have a letter, from 1824; it measures 79mm by 117mm (approx 3 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches). You must indeed be correct in thinking it contained letters. Since there are four compartments, do you think those under the flaps might have contained a lock of hair, to accompany the letters?

  9. Thank you, Kelly. It's always a pleasure to hear from you! I still wonder about the use of such a letter case: have only the favourite letters been kept in there or the most recent?
The letter case is in amazingly good condition, so it must have been always treated with great care or wasn't used often - I wish the case could tell it's story or reveal it's secret words written down in the letters...
And I very much pity that the art of letter writing gradually vanishes...sigh
