I couldn't remain without at least a bit of sewing this past week, thus I've spent the days with a project, which was on my mind for quite some time, but however lied dormant for too long:
A matching dress for my Augusta Christie dress.
Due to SceneInThePast's collection (please check, drool and bookmark asap!) and the lovely headdress' fashion plates my plans received the crucial push to realization.
I had this strawhat for ages, but never come to like the decoration and style, the brim was too short and anyway...

...a bit of silk and a new brim formed from stiff felt and eventually I sighed "Hat off!!!"

I love the ample decoration - a lovely "loud" 1815 hat!

The more "quiet" side. The ribbon was cut from fabric yardage with a pinking tool. The lower silk brim is sewn to the straw brim.

I've added a ribbon tie plus three small "fans" made from small fabric pieces, which are sewn onto the hat behind the ribbon tie.

And the front view. The edge of the brim is piped.

Finally I'm happy with the hat and I'm looking forward to taking a walk with this headdress and the matching Augusta Christie dress soon.

    Herzlich

  6. Ooo, Sabine, it's lovely! What a great shape! I can't wait to see pictures of it with the matching gown! I actually like the "loud" side best. :)

Did you extend the brim with the silk and felt, or is the straw brim that shape?

    1. Hi Quinn!
I added the new silk/felt brim to the original short straw brim. The silk brim starts at the edge of the crown (hidden under the straw brim) and molds to the shape of the straw brim. I created the extended shape using plenty of paper squares (measuring about 3 x 5 inch), which are temporary stuck (duct tape) to the edge (where crown and brim meet), building an unshaped brim. After adding the paper pieces all the way round (following the original brim shape) you'll get the extended brim, which can be cut in the intended shape. Then you'll take the template out, cut the piece open at the back and have a flat paper pattern for the new brim.
Hope my explanation isn't too confusing?! Next time I should take photos of the construction itself...

  11. Dear Sabine,

Your best hat yet! Loud? Beg to differ. It's elegant and not the least bit over the top. Can't wait to see it worn!

Very cool on the construction solutions, by the way...

  12. Lovely! I am not a bonnet girl - I struggle with period hats because I like 'hats' better than bonnets but my dear! This is a lovely confection. Yes, we must see with the dress!
