During 1798 to 1800 the popularity of overlapping dresses or rather bodices, which are usually closed with a small belt, is increasing in the Journal des Luxus und der Moden. This style, however, doesn't cover the fashion taste in 1801 anymore, which is evident in the comparison of the following plates.
Another charactaristic, namely the bindig of seams with tape, however remains fashionable.

A very pretty example of taped edges we'll find in a fashion plate from the year 1799. The collar was bound and then folded.

A third popular trend in Germany (and France) is also shown in this plate. The use of contrasting colours, like the highly fashionable lilac, but also slate grey, which was combined with orange and gold. Another favoured colour was copper.

I wanted to integrate these fashion trends into my work. I decided to pick elements, which I like, rather than to re-create an entire plate.

I've chosen a light old cotton fabric in copper and cut bias tape from chintzed red cotton.
The fabric was 80 centimetre wide and I had nearly 9 metres.

Only the bodice is lined, I used fabric scraps from stash.
The small belt (1.3 centimetre wide) is closed with a metal clasp.

The skirt from the inside. The edges are not cast, usually the loose threads and fray quickly start to felt by wearing and washing.

The lining is attached with pins in the front. There's a coulisse (channel), which ends about 2 centimetre before the front edge. This is how the bodice is closed from the inside, then both pieces are overlapped and kept in place with the belt from the outside.

On the inside the collar line is attached to the lining at one point only.

I combined the truly comfortable day dress with a chemise, a pair of stays, a petticoat, a Parisian cap, and a ridicule made of Nacarat.

  1. What a beautiful dress and colors. I noticed yet, one new dress white with the gold tape ? I like your new bag. I envy you wonderful travel to Weimar and times of the 19th century
I ordered a book that mentions the blog: "Die Kostümsammlung der Familie von Bassermann-Jordan" and I can not wait when I got in my hands.

    1. Thank you, it's lovely to hear from you again :)
I hope you do enjoy the book, it has photos (black and white) and patterns/diagrammes and a detailed text chapter. I already resized one or two patterns and adjusted them.
Weimar really is an amazing place, but very recently I watched a beautiful report about Nieborow and Arkadia, which seems to be a place, where time stands still - so beautiful. Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MtvseMoo2Y

  2. Dear Sabine,

Excellent research and execution, Sabine. The dress has such attractive lines, and the colors work so well together. Even the lining is spot on.

The entire ensemble is natural on you, neither overblown nor dull. Luxus readers -- and writers -- might well have been quite satisfied.

    Very best,
    Natalie
