Fächer, Sonnenfächer, Waderle, ein wigtiger Artikel im Putzhandel,... [sic]

It would be an exaggeration, when I'd tell that my lack of a proper fan would have ever made me worry, but I changed my mind this year, because once again we would visit the Duchess Anna Amalia's Wittumspalais in Weimar, and going there in the warmth of September without a proper fan would have caused plenty of frowns.
I was caught by surprise when my thoughts about that were crossed by a lovely find on the latest antique market. Disdained by the attention of passerby, I spotted an ornate carcass wrapped in silk: a fan. I gasped for air, when in my mind's eye I imagined, how the fan in all it's glory would do it's duty and provide me with said air. I carefully picked it from the table and proceeded with even more care while opening it...it has seen better days...much better days, back in the last quarter of the 18th century.
I took the fan home, to listen to it's story and - despite it's plight - give back some of the admiration it once abundantly experienced.

The silk is ripped at two ribs and one part of the leaf is missing. And one stick is broken close to the pivot and one missing entirely.

The monture is made of bone and is beautifully embellished with tiny sequins, which are now tarnished.

The guards are carved and adorned with sequins. The pattern is repeated in silk...

...und Goldfarbe.
...and gilt paint.

Die Darstellung der Mitte.
The picture in the middle.

The outlines are embellished with gold and silver.

The fan measures 26 cm in lenght. The depicted scene surely have told it's contemporaries a story, but unfortunately the meaning remains silent to me.

All I can do is admire the lovely craftmanship, which is not only shown on the front of the fan, but also on the back in a less elaborate painted silk layer.

The image from the front is also on the back, but not fully painted, there are only black, blue and red outlines. The silk is added in two layers, hence the ribs of the fan are hidden.

In the middle scene two figures are missing (man and woman), only the angel is painted in.
This detail reveals the seams of the sequins from the front.

Of course I would never ever use such fragile and valuable pieces of the past for my wardrobe, they remain as contemporary witnesses in my collection and are saved from further decay with conservation storage.
Nevertheless I still needed a proper fan.
Unfortunately I have none of the magnificient abilities like the french and russian fan makers back in the 18th century, who delighted every ladies' heart.
I stumbled upon a witty and lovely etching, which became the template for my work...and I purchased a wooden souvenir fan.

The frame of the fan was freed from the former fan leaf, before I rasped and sanded the sticks to a much smaller size, and finally it was painted.

I've chosen a fine muslin and commissioned a copy shop, which also offer to print on fabrics. The finished printed surface of the muslin has an amazingly similarity with the silk of the original of the 18th century.
The ribs on the back aren't hidden. As the fabric was a different shade then the front I applied some tea dye.

The leaf was added with starch glue.

The fan leaf makes me giggle. It's still as valid today as it was 1795, when George Wilson painted it.
"To plague and please all womankind,
Here's Gallants sure a plenty,------
Chuse then a Beau to suit your mind,
Or change till' one content ye."

  1. What an exquisite find!
And as I found myself already in the position of admiring your eventail in Weimar, I must say, I am a fan of it :-)

    1. Thank you :) It's truly difficult to transport the beauty of the original, it's such amazing craftmanship and everything seems so tiny, yet absolutely on spot.

  4. Dear Sabine,
On seeing that fan in the market, I wonder if you heard ringing in your ears and your heart ran fast, as you opened the leaves and saw such a treasure.

That's a lovely fan, very nicely made and in remarkably good color for its age. It's likely that that silk was to treated with alum to size it before the colors were applied, and that can make silk weaker, so that this lasted so well is testament to the maker(s) knowing their job thoroughly.

I can venture a guess as to the pictures' meaning. In the central panel, a young man and woman each make an offering to Cupid (Eros), in the hopes of receiving the favor of love. Cupid appears in the smoke of the altar fire.

The young man and woman in the side panels are pastoral figures, also associated with youth, dalliance, and love.

    Wonderful!

I love how your fan turned out. You paid such nice attention to the sticks: they look so much more in proportion now that they are sanded.

    Bravo!

    Hugs,

    Natalie

    1. Thank you! And yes, those were exactly my feelings upon spotting the fan on the market.
Thank you very much for helping me understand the picture's meaning. I still wonder why the couple isn't shown on the back of the fan?! I guess this is the true "language of fans", which we should learn to decipher :)

  5. Was für zauberhafte Exemplare, liebe Sabine!

  6. Thank you for sharing so many detailed pictures of your wonderful find. It's *almost* as good as holding the fan in my own hands. There is nothing like examining a real artifact from the time period, and this fan is full of so many details to examine! I also appreciate your tutorial on making your own version- I've seen several images of fan-leaves in online museum collections, just crying out to be made into a new fan. I might have to try it!
