I'm rather petite in the upper areas, so I'm not intending to use any boning, though I am considering a busk. Some of the extant pieces look rather floppy (as opposed to stiff) so I'm wondering if they are only two layers total. Thanks so much for your research and beautiful work! I usually work with historic patterns or my own draped & drafted patterns, but you can basically take every commercial short stays pattern and change it accordingly, which means: instead of the front closure, you have to assemble a back closure and add the strings coming around to the front.Kleidung um 1800https://www.blogger.com/profile/09187943106849398728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5761447847535936705.post-89245942916658080382016-05-23T01:54:33.963+02:002016-05-23T01:54:33.963+02:00that looks amazing. really comfortable and support...that looks amazing. really comfortable and support for fuller breast. It now has stretching straps, which haven't been around in th 1810s/20s, maybe someone has cut off the original straps and replaced them. It has lacing on back and front and no bust gussets at all. It's hard to tell why and when it was altered and what purpose it serves and when it was worn. Or if it was entirely made up like that in a later decade.
The only thing we can say for sure is that it's an unusual and uncommon garment.Kleidung um 1800https://www.blogger.com/profile/09187943106849398728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5761447847535936705.post-14541058942327863672015-09-14T01:40:05.904+02:002015-09-14T01:40:05.904+02:00Hi!

Thank you!

I stumbled across these http://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-collection-online/search/86421

Could it be possible there is a typo and they are really from 1816 or something? Or are they a maternity " bra " of some sort? They don't look like late 19th century at all though. thank you ver much for your comment.
...Dear Sanna,

thank you ver much for your comment.
If you intend to go for the very late 1790s a pair of 'transitional' stays would indeed be a very good choice. If you want to stretch from the mid 1790 to the late, the pair of stays, you've in mind from the met collection would be a very good option. It still has the shape of the earlier stays, but a different bust. You could also go for a pair of stays according to J.S. Bernhardt as his studies are related to an English book on stays from the early years of 1800 (and for that a tad earlier).
He has designed the stays after the construction of 18th century stays with a still prolonged construction covering the hips, but with the desired 'empire' bust-line. (Plus a great bonus: they are highly comfortable to wear)
The half stays in this post, however are to set more in the direction of the 1820s.
Hope this has helped you, otherwise please don't hesitate to ask.
Good luck on your new project :)
SabineKleidung um 1800https://www.blogger.com/profile/09187943106849398728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5761447847535936705.post-3449469562279211882014-01-07T06:48:37.714+01:002014-01-07T06:48:37.714+01:00Hi! I really want to start making costumes for the period 1794-1799, the "somewhere there in between" (not quite the empire waist but not quite the natural either) kind of dresses and now I'm trying to figure out what kind of stays I should make... What is your favourite for this period? I was thinking making these http://www.metmuseum.org/collections/search-the-collections/107910?img=0 but I'm not sure. I love the transition stays but ugh, so much work! Why do I always have to pick the ones that take so much time to make... :D Sanna Khttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15795829464979056917noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5761447847535936705.post-17571355012013059062013-11-14T16:09:34.641+01:002013-11-14T16:09:34.641+01:00Thank you very much for your lovely comment, Jay! ...Thank you very much for your lovely comment, Jay! I'm glad you like the information.
As for the corset in the met museum. This was actually not an undergarment, but a corset (french term for bodice) or corselet, which means it was worn on top of the dress. These are very decorative and made of silk. The corset/corselets came in lots of different shapes and colours as well as decorations. Very early pieces (dating late 1790s/early 1800s) used to be embellished around the edges with gilt ribbon (as described in the period journal 'Journal des Luxus und der Moden')
I've re-created a different style in a previous post, if you're interested, please take a peek here: http://kleidungum1800.blogspot.de/2012/05/1801-corset-de-soie.htmlKleidung um 1800https://www.blogger.com/profile/09187943106849398728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5761447847535936705.post-80698966488740007442013-11-13T17:41:25.033+01:002013-11-13T17:41:25.033+01:00What an interesting and helpful article on stays! ...What an interesting and helpful article on stays! I was really inspired by your corset above and looking at what you did I am trying to make a copy of yours. I hope you don't mind. Anyway, I put gussets in the bust area but the end result is it flattens my bust not cups it. Should I make the gussets wider? I am assuming that would make it work but I wanted to check. If you do see this comment/query can you respond my emailing me at decoangel@gmail.com? Thanks. I have a regency event to go to in May and I decided to make the corset before I am the dress. Cheers. These stays are highly comfortable, if only I've known before (as I have two front closure "short stays" with straight bottom edge in my wardrobe, too).
The stays a la Paresseuse were also known in a long version. Instead of adding cords/ribbons gathered in two bundles, you have to collect the ribbons in four bundles - you can easily alter your long stays if you sew the ribbons on the back side between the eyelets, then put them through the eyelets on the opposite side, bring them back over the boning and form two bundels on each side of the long center back. You won't need help with dressing anymore! It's fanatstic! The ladies back then have been so clever!!!Kleidung um 1800https://www.blogger.com/profile/09187943106849398728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5761447847535936705.post-33030959673595338712013-02-17T10:56:46.298+01:002013-02-17T10:56:46.298+01:00Thank you so much for the comment and for your won...Thank you so much for the comment and for your wonderful help with the sources from "Journal des Luxus und der Moden" :)))Kleidung um 1800https://www.blogger.com/profile/09187943106849398728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5761447847535936705.post-23560817753216957532013-02-17T10:55:48.728+01:002013-02-17T10:55:48.728+01:00Thanks for sharing the pictures of your beautiful ...Thanks for sharing the pictures of your beautiful transitional stays.Kleidung um 1800https://www.blogger.com/profile/09187943106849398728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5761447847535936705.post-22822650101567363972013-02-17T10:55:14.452+01:002013-02-17T10:55:14.452+01:00What an amazing find! Thank you for sharing more input on this research, Natalie.
Almost all texts, which I've read mentioned the developement of new (corded & strong) long stays around 1810. I wonder how quickly the patent spread throughout the fashion world and wether the use of "short" and "long" closely around the year 1800 referred to the creation/shape of a "long waist" like common in the fashions of the late 18th century or the new fashionable grecian "short waist", rather than the amount of fabric and the actual lenght of the garment?!
If only we would have access to letters, registers, account books, private painting collections etc, to get an idea what the descriptions would have looked like in real...Kleidung um 1800https://www.blogger.com/profile/09187943106849398728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5761447847535936705.post-92231192554275810302013-02-17T10:49:55.211+01:002013-02-17T10:49:55.211+01:00Thank you!Thank you!
