Wish we could get first hand information for what purpose both the 'corsets' or 'bodices' were intended. Underwear? Outerwear? The back of the bodice in the fashion plate very much reminds me of the back of the dresses with the diamond shape. You're probably right about the shaped front. Also I think the corset in the plate looks a bit darker than the dress (or chemise?)...I suppose without a source where these are described in detail (construction and use) we're lacking a proper answer.Kleidung um 1800https://www.blogger.com/profile/09187943106849398728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5761447847535936705.post-49161319248210343982013-11-09T15:15:02.793+01:002013-11-09T15:15:02.793+01:00You know, I'm also wondering about the constru...You know, I'm also wondering about the construction/pattern pieces for that garment in the French plate (I can't see much of the German one but yes, let's reasonably assume it's the same as the French). The way the back goes together reminds me a lot of this:
http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O316198/bust-bodice-unknown/
It's not quite the same, but it's got the same look to it, something that makes me think of more or less rectangular shapes sewn together in such a way to create a bias fit, rather than shaped pattern pieces. It's what fascinates me most about the V&A "bust bodice".Hana - Marmotahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03532515160608083460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5761447847535936705.post-5492713885556819912013-09-25T17:15:15.002+02:002013-09-25T17:15:15.002+02:00Dear Sabine,

In my (albeit faulty) memory, undergarments aren't usually shown in fashion plates, and when they appear in prints, they are usually accompanied by bedroom/boudoir furnishings or other signs that underline what's being shown.

We know the little bodices, for that's what they were could be called in the late 1790s, anyhow, were popular additions to add color and change to a dress. The little white dress was still popular in 1810, and so were all manner of little items meant to expand the looks available from that dress.

Very best,

Andrea S. Thadewaldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12236820135498579190noreply@blogger.com
