A glance into the wardrobe revealed a terrible truth: the lack of a ballgown or even an evening dress, theatre dress, concert dress...
Was that the sad reason (beside my disability to dance) that never ever any card d'invitation arrived at our house for a ball???

Ran an die Nähnadel!
Ein Ballkleid musste her! Natürlich in strahlendem Weiß!
 besser an Baumwolle denken!
I fetched my sewing needle!
I was in desperate need of a ballgown! One in shiny white!
After leafing through various books and browsing plenty of fashion plates I decided on a 1815 dress with a heavy trimmed flounce at the skirt.
And the dress shouldn't be made from silk or muslin, but from perkale (cotton), because I was thinking of a neat dance and assembly in a village, instead of a grande ball in a capitol.
There are quite a number of dresses made from perkale of around 1815, which shows that a dress (and even more so a recreation) neither has to be expensive nor by all means made of silk.
Instead of chosing poly fibre to keep the budget tight, please think of cotton!

Ackermann's Repository November 1817

The decision was made, a dress made from cotton with so-called "bouffonés" at the skirt, which were fashionable from the 1815s onward. This kind of trim is shown in many fashion plates, like the Ackermann's Repository above, but also at Costume Parisien or in the book "Napoleon and the Empire of fashion".

Additionally to the bouffonés there are tiny sateen dots woven into the fabric

There are ties for back closure. The sleeves are partially decorated with ruched inserts.

Dots and ruched trimming everywhere. The front piece is horizontally ruched.
On a side note: I wear a shirt, a corset and a petticoat with the dress.

The fabric is a nearly fifty year old and used bedsheet made from cotton and sateen with a still marvellous shine and plenty of woven lovely little dots.
The fabric is very soft and smooth and has a gorgeous swing.

The ruched trimming is made from self fabric, while the bouffonés are made from superfine batiste (outside) and muslin (inside). Furthermore I stuffed the bouffonés with muslin, to provide more stiffness. I got inspired from this site here.
There are pipes on both sides of the ruches. The poufs were first sewn onto a band, which was then attached to the skirt.

The dress is closed with ties on the back (my studies on various online museum sites revealed that a whole lot of dresses usually had ties for back closure). There are also two wings (lining), which are closed with pins.
The seams on the inner armskyes are left raw. The inner front bodice piece is slightly smaller and has two darts for comfort fit...

The construction of the front (inside and outside) is partially inspired by the patterns from the book "Kostümsammlung Bassermann Jordan". Note the slightly curved line on the side piece, which helps to shape the front piece without using darts.
The bodice pattern contains 8 pieces altogether.

Nun muß ich nur noch Tanzen lernen!
Now I just need to work on my dancing skills!

  4. So wunderschoen ein Kleid, Sabine. Elegant, einfach...

A quick question for you: the book Die *Kostümsammlung der Familie von Bassermann-Jordan* keeps turning up in blog posts from Germany. Is it a common book there? It is very rare here, so rare that few libraries have it. Does it have many patterns in it, and are they of a quality that you would recommend? I ask because if so, I am going to attempt to get it by Interlibrary Loan for a few weeks.

    Very best,
    Natalie

  5. Dear Natalie,

the book about the "Bassermann Jordan costume collection" is very interesting, it's devided into three parts: very detailed description of the garments, patterns to each garment - also very few men's (which are all similarly shown as those in the Norah Waugh book) and finally black and white pictures of the garments. It covers the eras from Rococo to Victorian. There are several gowns from the early 1800s and a spencer. If you're able to grab it, please do so! It's actually out of print, but I - not able to deny being a bookseller - was very lucky to find it for a real bargain price and I use it quite often.

  6. thank you so much for showing the back closure! I've been wanting to do something similar, instead of the usual buttons. It looks lovely and the bouffones are super cute as well.

  8. Dear Sabine,
Thank you kindly for the information about the book! It sounds really good. I've been all over the internet and as expected, there are no copies floating around here. However, a few libraries do have it, so I shall interlibrary-loan it and read it that way.

    Very best,

    Natalie
