Before I share my interpretation of the Riding Habit of Queen Louise of Prussia (1776 - 1810), first a little bit about the history of the garment.
Luckily the history is very well documented. Only the skirt got lost in the past, but it was made of the same fabric and colour as the spencer.
In early 1806 Queen Louise was close to being thirty years old, when her husband King Friedrich Wilhelm III. gave order that she became head of the dragoon's regiment No.5.
From that day on the regiment was called "Königin".
After the declaration of war from Prussia to France, Queen Louise met her regiment on the way through Berlin to the battlefield.
For this occassion King Friedrich Wilhelm III. had ordered a uniform riding habit in the colours of the regiment. The garment made by the famous tailor Francois Vogel was inspired by the latest fashion plates.
Queen Louise has worn the uniform a second time, only one month later on a parade, when her guards marched into the battle of Auerstedt.
Her uniform has brought her lots of mockery from the French and many caricaturists aimed on her.
Records reveal that the spencer is the oldest still existing female military uniform in Germany.

Und nun darf ich bitten:
Stillgestanden! Augen geradeaus!
And now I may ask:
Attention! Eyes front!

Meine Interpreation vom Spenzer der Königin Luise von Preußen (1806)
My interpretation of the Queen Louise of Prussia spencer (1806)

Primarily the lady's spencer jacket in the early 19th century was influeneced in it's developement by tailored military garments. This spencer truly builds a bridge from the female fashion, which serves the adornment, and a pure military garment. It is tailored following the latest fashions, but shows also clear signs of a military uniform/men's garment (especially in the lining)
Rückseite des Königin Luise Spenzer
back of the Queen Louise spencer

I needed the following material:
5 yards of medium blue, slightly roughened wool
1.2 yard of crimson red cotton velvet (the original fabric was silk velvet)
1 yard of ponceau red silk taffeta (the original is silk sateen)
1.2 yard cotton/linen mix fabric for interlining
a bit of white wool fabric for padding
horsehaircanvas for the collar and lapels
5 yards of real silver trim
32 shaped silver buttons
white cotton and linen thread
...and lots of patience, because it is completely hand-sewn.

Like mentioned before, I've first set my eyes on this amazing garment in the catalogue of the 2010s exhibition "Luise - Kleider der Königin". Thankfully the text is very helpful and describes the spencer in detail.
But one description confused me, it was the mention of padding in the back of the silk lining.
To my relief the friendly staff at the textile department of the Miltärhistorischen Museum der Bundeswehr in Dresden, listened to my distress call and revealed the secret to me. With the new information I was able to change my - unfortunaley already started  - attempt of padding.
The shoulder pieces padded with wool fabric (front and back) after the Original

The back. The running stitches are only 1-2 milimetres. The padding reaches less than 10 centimetres into the front of the shoulder piece.

The silk lining. In the upper part of the back piece is the padding/quilting copied from the original (The diagonal quilting below was my first attempt, which I have left. That quilting is of course not seen in the original spencer)
The padding in the back piece reaches only 7 centimetres down.

The sleeves (lining) have been set in with tiny overcast stitches. The collar was attached with slip stitches on the inside. Shown on the left, the collar, which has a layer of horsehair canvas to give shape.

The collar meets the padedd silk in the shoulder area. (Yes, that's the way a thumb looks after sustained handsewing...lol)

The side view of the spencer. In the end I decided against a copy of the Garde du Corps trim stitched with silver purl. Instead I purchased a lovely modest silver trim.
The horsehair canvas helps to beautifully shape the lapels.

The back view. The back piece is cut very narrow and the sleeves reach far into the back, thus the wearer is nearly forced to stand straight and keep the shoulders slightly backwards.

The silver trim measures less than 1 Zentimeter. It was made by weaving silver thread around a silk thread. It's beautiful and I'm glad I've found the source for it.
Surely it's due to the trim, the buttons and the lining and cotton/linen interlining , that the spencer weighs more than a pound. Compared to my common spencers it is really heavy.

The pocket flaps have no function. But I covered the back with silk taffeta.

A unique garment like this, asks for a unique stage. We have mounted our carriage and went to the close-by  abbey Kloster Oelinghausen.
The abbey was found in the Middle Ages and was a convent until the secularisation in March 1804.

The complete ensemble of the Military Uniform Riding Habit consist of:
a specer
a woolen skirt
a tophat with ostrich feathers
white gloves
an embroidered chemisette
a cotton petticoat
short stays
shirt
clocked silk stockings in light blue from American Duchess (Thanks for creating them, Lauren. The stockings are great!)
Walking shoes in black from Robert Land Footwear

Das äußere Tor
The outer gate

The path leads to the chapel and a close-by walled herb garden

Along the chapel there's a wall, behind that is a quaint yard and a group of stone houses.
Ich liebe den alten Taubenschlag im Hintergrund
I love the old dove's tower in the background.

Although it's a crisp morning, the lovely sunshine is coaxing to take a stroll down to the group of houses. I really like this particular picture.

For anyone who's interested to learn more about Queen Louise and her fashion, I'd like to recommened the catalogue/book "Luise - Kleider der Königin" published by Hirmer Verlag.
And for anyone, who'd like to see the original riding habit from 1806, it is on display at the Militärhistorisches Museum der Bundeswehr in Dresden in the exhibit "Krieg und Gedächtnis".

  4. Hurrah! It's finished! And gorgeous, of course. I'm shocked (although I don't know why) at how military it really does look. The impression is severe and commanding. Even though it is beautiful, it's definitely not what I would call feminine. She was certainly an imposing and impressive figure in charge, and I'm sure her men knew that by the look of her clothing. Well done, once again!

    1. Yes, Queen Louise must have been an impressive sight as she was also quite tall with 5.7 feet!
That garment really forces you to have a remarkable posture. I love that it is a link connecting women's fashion and the military origin.
Thank you very much for your lovely comment :)

  5. The most beautiful riding habit,I have ever seen Sabine. Great work!
I have two question: why these spencer was quilted in back? It for " a la mode militaire" or for warm clothing? And how you made silver trim?

The padding in the back and shoulder part surely comes from the military origin, but I haven't cleared that question yet.
I have purchased the vintage silver trim - wish I could make it myself though :)

The vinatge silver trim is really amazing, the silver is still shiny, but not too much.
The spencer has a snug fit, it's not a garment I would love to wear daily, but then again Queen Louisa have worn it only on the parades.

  8. I know I say this every time, but really you have outdone yourself. The historical notes, and techniques are superb. I suppose because I am such a fan of Luisa, but this is one really is special. I hope you get a chance to share it with the general public in an educational or other museum setting. It deserves to be shared, and admired for the artwork it is. Cheers!

Oh yes, I wish I could share the haptic experience of the garment. Those, who have examined it here, first remarked that it looks very tiny (although I have patterned it to fit my size "M") and that it is really quite heavy.
I love the lining and the quilting, too :)
You should get the book about Louise, pity it is only published in German, but it offers a lovely range of pictures.

  13. Sabine, so beautiful! I love the piece and the photos of you in the landscape, like a period painting.
The padding in the back is curious; I will have to check the uniforms in our collection. I know they have padding in the fronts (mostly for style, I think) but I have no recollection of the backs. Again, just lovely!

I would love to learn more about the padding of the uniforms in your museum's collection. It would be a treat if you'd share your knowledge. I thought the padding in the shoulder area would be common in uniforms, as it moderates weight if something is carried in a rucksack etc. on the back?!

  15. Dear Sabine,
Now, how many times have I said this? You've durn done it again, and this time in spades. The cut is just right, the trim applied beautifully, and the effect so suits you, walking along those stony lanes, all the grays and browns in the walls and houses playing so well off the blue of the uniform. Like others who have commented, sure hope you get to display this one for the public.

I've been offline for a few days: what happiness to come back to such a post!

    Very best,

  16. Sabine! Wow what an endeavor! Your method of laying out your process inspired my layout at my blog. In anycase, is the quilting or padding for a purpose? Was it to give the spencer shape or to smooth out the contours of a woman's body in a military style? Or was it just about tailoring a jacket? The outcome of your work is fab and you have such wonderful places to go and wear them. Cheers!!

    1. Dear Angela,
thank you very much for your comment!
This was my first encounter with military garments and unfortunately I'm not really sure about the purpose of the padding.
All I can tell about it is that the padding is "lightweight" as the underlayer is thin wool, but there's already an effect in wearing. It doesn't shape the contours, but pads the back/neck and shoulders (the place where rucksacks and rifles would have been carried).

Actually your amazing Lady Wosley riding habit (http://augustintytar.blogspot.de/2012/06/late-1770s-riding-habit-in-style-of.html) was my inspiration for this project. Isn't it such fun to try to get as close to an original as possible? The period tailors and seamstresses are wonderful teachers.
