A certain headwear should not be missing when it comes to ensembles of the mid 1790s: the head piece. What appears a bit eccentric to our modern eyes, was a popular accessory for the half dress. At that time the sheer size in headwear and hairdos has decreased, but that surely didn't apply to it's popularity.

I've chosen cardboard, black cotton chintz, black silk gauze from antique stock (a generous gift from Monsieur T.) and a beautifully pleated silk ribbon (a lovely gift from Natalie) to serve for my recreation. I also added a black old stock silk ribbon tie.
First the cardboard is covered with the chintz from both sides, while the fabric on the outside is set in pleats. The fabric is turned in at the edges and sewn together with overcast stitches. At the lower edge the green silk ribbon is sewn into the chintz.
The puffs are made of silk gauze. A big silk gauze tie (this fabric has the most amazing stand ever) is attached at the back, a small silk tie adorns the forehead.
Please note the slightly bend shape of the head piece.
I skipped the ostrich feather shown in the plate.

The head pieces were common in different varieties, some whimsically small, others joyfully big. Often fully embellished, and at the dame time elegant and coy.
These head pieces were worn open, like a wreath on top of the hairdo, and also as a demi-bonnet with a cap crown attached.

For this purpose I assembled a cap crown made of cotton organdy, which can be attached to the head piece with just a few stitches, and there we have a demi-bonnet.
And this way the head dress looks even more eccentric.
The attached cap came in different sizes, too. Probably depending on the fashionable sense and bravery of the wearer - today and back then!
Ein augengefälliges Zusammenspiel
An eye-pleasing combination
Wagemutige Damen vortreten!
Bold ladies step forward!

Of course this lovely head piece with a half dress was already worn. Could there be a better appointment than a morning visit to Duchess Anna Amalias official residence the Wittumspalais in Weimar?

  3. Liebe Sabine,

Truly, have been fascinated by these types of headdresses ever since discovering Lexus Und dear Moden, what is it, going on a decade ago? finally you have made one of the signature accessories of the period, and it's ducky.

Your use of the gauze ribbon was just right...no heavier ribbon would have held its shape so well, and the under structure was neat to read about. Would be interested to learn about your decision to use pasteboard. Perfectly sensible...was it in Lexus?

Worn in Weimar, too, in that wonder-room of Anna Amalia's, with the cloak...

Anyhow, your post has made my weekend.

    Hugs,

    Natalie
