Die Zeile aus der Überschrift entstammt einem Brief aus dem Jahr 1799.
Genauer gesagt vom 11.Oktober 1799.
Geschrieben wurde er in Jena von Dorothea Veit (die spätere Dorothea Schlegel) an Friedrich Schleiermacher.
In dem Brief ist die Rede von Caroline Schlegel (später Caroline Schelling) und er liest sich im Auszug folgendermaßen:
...Sie (Caroline Schlegel) kleidet sich simpel aber nett, und in einem recht guten Geschmack;
...Da sie alles was sie trägt selbst macht, so ändert sie ohne grosse Kosten ihren Anzug sehr oft, und erscheint immer frisch und niedlich, auch sitzt ihr alles recht gut.
Übrigens lohnt sich das Eintauchen in die Quelle, in die lebendigen und mitreissenden Briefe und vor allem eine nähere Bekanntschaft mit den Damen Dorothea Schlegel und Caroline Schelling, deren Leben oft spannender verlief als so mancher Schriftsteller es in Romanen ersinnen könnte.

This headline is taken from a letter from the year 1799.
From the 11th October 1799, to be more precisely.
It was written by Dorothea Veit (later Dorothea Schelgel) to Friedrich Schleiermacher.
The letter also mentions Caroline Schlegel (later Caroline Schelling) and it reads as follwos in this excerpt:
...She (Caroline Schlegel) dresses simply but nicely, and with quite good taste;
...Because she makes all her own clothes,
she is able to change what she wears quite often and without great cost,
and always appears fresh and dainty, and all her clothes also look very
good on her.
It's an immense pleasure to peruse the above mentioned excellent english website and learn more from the vivid and enthusiastic letters, and get acquainted to Caroline Schelling and her contemporaries from the German Early Romanticism, whose lives are highly exciting and could easily surpass some fictional novels.
Aber nun ist es an der Zeit eine Brücke von der Literatur und Schreibkunst an den Nähtisch zu schlagen!
Als ich neulich, nach meiner Rückkehr aus Weimar, meine Garderobe in Augenschein nahm, entdeckte ich einige vernachlässigte Stücke, die es - ganz im Sinne von Caroline Schelling - wert waren, umgeändert zu werden.
Glücklicherweise hatte ich noch ein wenig passenden Stoff des betreffenden Kleides und hinzu kam ein Reststück Seide, vom Farbton ein wenig widersprechend, was dem Ergebnis dann aber wiederum mehr 'Wirklichkeit' verlieh, denn auch damals wurde für eine Umänderung genutzt, was verfügbar war.

Upon my return from Weimar I recently checked my wardrobe and found a few pieces, which I haven't worn in a long time. I decided - like the above mentioned Caroline Schelling - to alter them a bit.
Luckily I still had a remnant of the dress' silk and another piece of silk, with a slightly different colour scheme, not really matching on first glimpse, but somehow it looked quite 'real', and more than two hundred years ago a seamstress would have taken whatever was available.
Nur eine kleine (wenngleich zeitaufwändige) Veränderung, mit großer Wirkung. Lediglich der Saum am Rockteil und am Ärmelaufschlag wurden verändert.
Just a wee (but alas time consuming) alteration, but with great effect. Only the decoration on the skirt's hem and on the cuffs was changed.
Dafür wurden 2 Stücke à 2.50m x 7cm (Rockumfang 2 Meter) von beiden Seiten mit schmalem Seidenband eingefasst und...
The first step was to take two bands measuring 2.50m x 7cm (skirt's circumference is 2m) and bind them with small silk bias on both edges before...
...dann etwa alle 7 cm zusammengefasst.
... ruffling them every 7 cm.
Um letztendlich kleine Kreise zu formen.

Die Bänder wurden leicht versetzt aufgenäht.
Both bands were sewn on slightly offset.
Die Farbtöne Salbei und Olive harmonieren auf den ersten Blick nicht wirklich, ergeben aber einen schönen und lebendigen Gesamteindruck.
The colour shades sage and olive do not match too well on first glance, but altogether build a vivid and beautiful sight.
Das schlichte Kleid erhält eine interessante Note.

Die Dekoration wurde nach Augenmaß angenäht und hier und da ein wenig zusammengeschoben.
The decoration was sewn on by eye's measurement. Here and there it was pulled or pushed.
Am Ärmelaufschlag genügte eine Reihe in halber Größe vom Rocksaum.
At the cuffs I added only one row, half measure of the hem's decoration.
Ich denke, es hat sich gelohnt, Caroline Schellings Vorbild zu folgen. In naher Zukunft beabsichtige ich noch ein weiteres Kleidungsstück umzuarbeiten.
I guess, it was worth it to alter the dress according to Caroline Schelling's example. I intend to alter another piece from my wardrobe soon.
