Often art is a wonderful source for costume studies, and sometimes the paintings of an artist mean an unexpected armchair travel.
Yesterday I accidentally stumbled over the dutch artist Wybrand Hendriks (1744-1831). One of his paintings shows the truly amazing Teyler's Museum in Haarlem.

 I've already visited this museum twice and I'm always deeply fascinated. The "Teylers Physische en Naturalien Kabinetten en Bibliotheek" is the oldest museum in the Netherlands and was founded in 1784. The picture above shows the ovale room, which still looks like that today.
The collection of instruments, curiosities, coins, books and paintings, which are displayed, is unique, and even more so, because it's displayed in amazing rooms like the one above!

But back to the artist Wybrand Hendriks, because I've noticed this little gem in his collection of paintings:

A lovely costume related and historically related study, which didn't fail to inspire me to the following icon/banner. If you like it, please snatch/grab/take it for your site and spread the joy of hand sewing:)

  3. @Issy: The city of Haarlem is always worth a visit (and it's not too far away from Amsterdam). Lots of beautiful houses, museums and shops. Visiting the Teyler's Museum is always like stepping back in time!
    @Samantha: Yes, please snatch it!!!

  4. I love the first painting, the room put in context by the people visiting it. And the second one is just lovely, so intimate. I'll add Haarlem to the "can't miss it when I visit Amsterdam" list ;-). Thanks!
