...I'm going slightly mad!

While I've spent the past weeks and month in utmost pleasure with studying the fashions of the early Romanticism,
March (...and maybe April!) will be again dedicated to the curious garments of the era of high Romanticism.
For quite a while a certain dress from our wonderful dutch neighbours, namely the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, was fairly on top of my sewing wishlist, but unfortunately the project never made it on my table due to a lack of matching fabric...
...until now! Once again the cosmic fabric allocator kindly rewarded my search.
After a short email exchange the friendly curators of the Rijksmuseum added some very useful information to the description of object BK - 1983 - 44 with lots of new details, especially about the back view of the dress.

What seems to be a common check pattern from a distance, reveals to be a pattern of stripes on close examination.
This specific patterning enables the rows of piping and cording to hide some of the horizontal checks and leaves other visible.
Furthermore it gives the actual blue colour a more greyish impression.

Unfortunately my plaids run a smaller scale, which will eventually result in more difficulties with adding the piping...and of course it will give the dress itself a unique and different look.

Two different sizes for the piping. The hem of the Original is made of sixteen rows of large piping, twenty-four rows of small piping and twenty-four rows of topstitched cording.
According to my fabric pattern, I plan to sew sixteen rows of large piping, sixteen rows of small piping and eighteen rows of top-stitched cording.

Die Paspeln werden aus zugeschnittenem Baumwollstoff gearbeitet.
The piping is done from cut lenghts of cotton fabric.

The stripes are .4 inches and 1/2 inch wide and are ironed in half after cutting. A time-consuming and probably rather silly project, as the cutting of half of the piping already took about an hour...

...aber die Muse am Nähtisch sagt: durchhalten!
...but the muse at the sewing table advocates: hang on!

  2. Glad you are getting to a project you have wanted to do. I am a bit confused. What is the plain white stripes for? You are not just taking a tuck in the dress fabric and inserting the piping? Just curious. Good luck.

    1. Thank you!
Heehee, that cosmic fabric allocator often strikes out of the blue!
Actually my husband has purchased the fabric a few weeks ago, when he suddenly heard me screaming "There! There's the fabric, look at that auction!" But it was intended as a birthday gift, so I had to wait a little bit, which was quite matching with my sewing schedule, because I wanted to finish the late 1790s wardrobe first...you see, that cosmic fabric allocator is really magical ;)

  5. The original is one of my favourites, looking forward to see what you make of it! How nice that they shared more info and pictures, perhaps one should try to ask about an item one wonders about sometime...

    1. Thanks a lot, Sarah! Yes, I was happy about more info on the back of the bodice, which wasn't on the website before...hopefully I'm able to go to Amsterdam soon to pay a visit to the Rijksmuseum - well, Amsterdam is always worth a visit anyway :)
