It never ceases to amaze me, when a fabric, which has spent years in a fabric stash and almost vanished into oblivion, suddenly emerges in the mind's eye as a completed dress while coming across a proper inspiration.
And it's even more pleasant, when there's a convincing result after long hours at the sewing table.
This happened a few weeks ago, when thanks to the lovely Mme Kaya I set my eyes on a most unusual dress...and this weekend the garment was finally done with the last stitch.

Unfortunately the garment doesn't seem to be part of the actual exhibition/collection of the Museo del Traje, at least I couldn't get any more information on their site.
Anyway I haven't had a complete reconstruction in mind, but wanted to use some of the amazing details.
First and foremost I decided to take the above mentioned fabric, instead of the powder red fabric with the border on the hem: a small plaid cotton.
A plaid, like taken in this pelisse of the 1815 La Belle Assemblée, which is under the following link (please, scroll down to Fig.10)
Furthermore I was going for a shorter skirt, which was fashionable in 1815.

While I was working on a proper pattern and studying the marvellous details, I couldn't help but think of the fashion plates in 1814 from Emile Jean-Horace Vernet (1789-1863) called 'Merveilleuse et Incroyables'.
It was a set of 33 engravings, which displayed highly fashionable french ladies and gentlemen, whose clothing would be best described as screaming loud.
Even though my dress turned out a bit less loud, some of the details would surely have caused an uproar two hundred years ago in my provincial town!
I'm able to imagine the gossip: "...merveilleuse..."

I've used approx. 8 yards of plaid cotton (which was approx. 35 inch wide), furthermore about one yard of contrasting red wool for piping, and a good lenght of cord.
Only the bodice is lined with cotton.

The most striking detail on the dress is the bodice with it's emphasized (faked) bosom, which divorce and high line display the ideal of female's shape in 1815.
The fabric was cut on the bias and sewn into 25 pintucks, which makes these parts quite elastic.

Left side. The lining was added with slip stitch around the bosom parts. The piped edge remains unfinished.
The short puffed sleeves are cut on the bias, too. They are pleated and then sewn onto the piped red edge.

Not only the seams of the lining on the edge of the bodice remain unfinished, also those on the sleeve caps. Don't worry, this was actually period and it stopps ravelling through wear.

The belt is also sewn into pintucks along the front. It is attached to the dress at the piping. The belt measures around 3 yards in lenght and is about 6 inch wide. It's completely piped with the back of the piping folded under and stitched down.

The upper edge of the skirt was folded, gathered into tiny pleats and then stitched onto the bodice.

Ein Details des Ärmelaufschlags. Eine doppelte Paspellierung.
A detail of the sleeve cuff. Double piping.

The dress is closed at the back with a set of 10 hooks and bars.

Der Rocksaum wird innen mit Stoffresten hinterlegt.
The skirt's hem is faced with fabric scraps on the inside.

The skirt decorations was also cut on bias, then pleated and piped on both sides. The skirt has a circumference of 78 inches and reaches a bit above the ankle. I wear black leather shoes from Robert Land Footwear with this dress. The shoes are built on straight lasts.

I'm wearing a shift/chemise under this dress, half stays a la paresseuse, a petticoat, white stockings and a chemisette with a three-layered pleated collar.

 Die Rückseite mit der Schleife.
The back with the huge bow tie.

Beide Seiten.
Both sides. The puffed sleeves set on the very edge of the shoulders create the desired mid 1810s look.

I couldn't resist to have a picture taken with my muse (Mila wasn't that fond of the idea though)

The very long sleeves are tamed and gathered with the piped cuff ties. The decoration of the very edge is made of a lined and pleated ring, which is sewn onto the lower edge, whereas the upper edge remains open.

The dress is incredible comfortable and the skirt has a lovely swing...

...furthermore the bow tie and the pleats in the back create a proper Regency impression.

I'd like to give thanks and credit to my smart & amazing niece, who was responsible for taking this set of photos without being impressed by two difficult sitters. You're gorgeous, Cora!

    1. Vielen lieben Dank!

  3. I really love this dress. I especially like the effect of the pleating in the front of the bodice. It makes the plaid look like another fabric. Thanks again for being so inspiring.

    1. Thank you so much! I was also amazed by the effect of the pintucks while sewing them, with each new row the pattern developed from checks to diamonds.

  4. Dear Sabine,
Now there's a real dress: one that's very much of its period, and when worn, looks even "realler". With the ruff it takes on an extra dimension that I really like.

Poor Mila: it's easy to recognize the "I am not comfortable but I will put up with being held, just for you" semi-stiffness. Pretty girl; glad you got the shot with her in it!

So much worth the hours of work, Sabine!

    Very best,

    Natalie

    1. Thanks kindly! Funny thing, I loved the original dress from the first peek, but I thought the colour was rather boring (or just faded?!)...I'm happy you like the dress with my choice of fabric :)

  9. Sabine, you did a lovely job creating this gown, and it looks super cute on you, but I just find that it isn't a style I would wear, so I can't fall in love with it like I have some of your other gowns. But I don't mean to be discouraging, because I do think you solved some very interesting construction questions and, as I said, created a visually interesting gown! You make it look fantastic!

    Best,
    Quinn

  18. I love this dress Sabine, your work keeps inspiring me to try new methods. I wonder, though, as dresses in this period were made to fit the wearer and not from patterns, could the pleated front have been higher up on the bust and be more like the expandable cups on a set of stays?

    1. Thank you very much, Aylwen!
It is always hard to tell how a museum piece on a dressform would have fit the original wearer. In this case it would have been two options indeed. The bust/bosom seems to be very important in the Regency (there have even been books about it like Klees 'Ueber die weiblichen Brueste' (1806)). This shows that the bodice front of the dress could really cover the actual bust like a corset elastique, or that it creates a 'fake' perfect regency bust' silhouette.
On my mock-up I slightly enlarged the 'cups' to custom fit, but I thought this would change the overall look compared to the original, so I went for the second option instead. Hope this answers your question.
